Alma let out a breath, feeling her entire body untense at once. She looked at Charlie, who was fumbling with her diaper. She looked at it herself, gave a tug of the tapes and shook her head.

“She did something to it. Probably all of the ones here have some ghost-y magic on ‘em that stops ‘em from coming off. I’m not gonna be able to get it off without time and tools.”

“Ah, great,” Charlie muttered, finally giving up and instead trying to get back into her jeans so she at least had something covering up her new puffy white undergarments. “If it comes to it, you think you can take on that nanny?” Alma grimaced and shook her.

“I…really don’t think so. She’s a lot stronger than the little runts and this place is her domain, she made that obvious. She probably has a lot of additional power she’s not even showing just from being totally in sync with this place.” She put a hand on her hip. “I could maybe annoy her for a while or distract her while running away, but in a straight 1v1, I think I’d lose, huge.”

Charlie let out a sigh.

“Then we gotta make sure we avoid that. Alright. In that case, we should just get the ectoplasm and get out, ASAP, before we give her any reason to be anymore interested in us than she already is.” Alma blinked a couple of times, shook her head and held her hands out expectantly.

“What?” She asked, the word stuffed with incredulity. “You still want the ectoplasm for your stupid chocolate truffle?! Charlie, she just said she’ll keep us here if she wants and I just told you I can’t stop her from doing that!”

“If she was just gonna decide on a lark to keep us here, she woulda done it already,” Charlie said matter-of-factly. “You just said it - if she wanted it to be over, it’d already be over. Bibs, bottles and butts.” They heard one of the ghosts giggle and repeat the word ‘butts’, which got the others to laugh, too. Charlie and Alma tried their best to ignore them. “She came here to tend to those little smallfry ones and make sure we know she’s here. As long as we don’t give her a reason to mess with us, I think she’ll stay out of it!”

“And what about these little jackasses?” Alma asked, gesturing to the four ghost girls. “They just put you in a diaper, do you really think they’re gonna stop?”

“I mean, no, not really,” Charlie said. “But they kinda suck at it? I mean they got this on me, but that’s because I fell asleep at the wheel. If we just stick together and be careful, they can’t do diddly-squat to us.”

“Can you guys stop insulting us while we’re all standing right here?!” The red ghost, Licorice, exclaimed.

“Maybe you should take it as a hint to stop standing there and get lost!” Alma snapped back.

“Blehhh!” Licorice stuck her tongue out. “Say whatever you want - you’re right, you should get the heck outta here right now, ‘cause if you stay here, Ida’s totally gonna turn you all into diaper babies — guuuhhh!”

Alma reached out and grabbed Licorice by the collar and pulled her in close. All of that guilt about beating up on the ghost girls seemed to be gone, now.

“What’s gonna make her decide to keep us here? Be specific.” She gave Licorice a little shake. “Now.”

“Eeehhuuhh, okay, okay, okay!” Licorice waved her hands. “She has a checklist! She always uses the same rules, she always has! She’ll decide to enroll somebody once they’re, uh.” She started counting on her fingers. “Wearing a diaper, wearing clothes from the daycare, fed with food from the daycare and asleep in one of the cribs in the bedroom.”

“After she ‘enrolls’ somebody, how long does she keep them?” Alma asked.

“Like - like, usually for months! Like, I dunno, 3, 4, 5, 6 months!” Licorice sputtered out. Alma dropped her and she fell on her bottom, before floating away, back to the others.

“So that’s only five things that gotta happen,” Alma said, holding up her fingers. “And Charlie, you’ve already got one of them.” Charlie waved a hand dismissively.

“Psshhfff! It took them a cheap trick to get that much. We’ll be more careful, like I said, it’ll be fine! Hey, you guys!” She said, addressing the other ghosts. “Since we’re stickin’ around, how about you tell us where we can find more ectoplasm?” The ghosts looked at each other, muttering among themselves. Alma reached out and grabbed another one and hauled her up, this time the green one.

“Aahhhhh, no, don’t hit me!” Mint cried, waving her hands. “I’ll talk, I’ll talk! The ectoplasm forms in the rooms we spend the most time in, so, that’s the playroom, the kitchen and the bedroom!”

Alma dropped her. Mint let out a breath of relief.

“Now get lost,” Alma said. The ghosts muttered amongst themselves. Alma took one step towards them and growled. They all squealed and scattered. She let out a sigh and looked at Charlie. “You seriously still wanna do this?”

“Super seriously!” Charlie said, patting Alma on the back. Alma sighed and shook her head.

“Collateral. Bonus. Month’s rent. Don’t forget,” she said and Charlie groaned as she remembered.

“…nope. Nope. It’s worth it. It’s definitely worth it!” She assured herself.

—-

“Mint, you gave up like, instantly!” Licorice said, pinching Mint on the arm. “Now they know exactly where to go!”

“She was gonna punch me in the face!” Mint said defensively, rubbing her arm where she was pinched. “Besides, you talked right before that!”

“Well, that was only ‘cause she was gonna punch me in the face!” Licorice whined back. “It would’ve been easier to trick them again if they were wandering around without any idea what to do all night! Now they’re just gonna go to those three rooms and then leave!”

“Uhm, m-maybe that’s okay?” Choco asked, raising a hand. “They know where to go, but, now we know exactly where they’re gonna go, too, and, uhm. We can probably figure out the order they’re gonna go in too, just based on which room they’re closest to. We have three chances to get them, now.” Lemon popped her pacifier out of her mouth.

“I agree with Choco.”

She then put the pacifier back in and resumed sucking on it.

“Look look look look look.” Mint held her hands up. “All we gotta do is get all five things on one of them, so Ida will enroll them! They’re friends, so the other one will be dumb enough to stick around trying to save their friend and then we’ll have all the time we need to get that one!”

“Uhm, I dunno if the witch considers the other one a friend,” Licorice pointed out.

“Witch first,” Lemon said in agreement, then again, went back to her pacifier.

“Hehehehehe….”

The ghost girls groaned to themselves. A pink light floated into their midst again.

“It sounds like you all know what you want to do now. But if you only have three chances, maybe you’re ready to ask for help?” The light floated between them. “I’ll even be nice and agree to a 50-50 split. You get one…” The light floated in front of Licorice, who swatted at it. It floated away. “I get one. But I get to pick.”

“Just go away, ‘Berry, we don’t need you!” Licorice snapped. “Why should we let you have one when we can just get both on our own!”

“You just wanna hog all the humans for yourself, same as ever!” Mint accused. The light seemed unbothered by the accusations.

“Well, just so you know…if you mess up again. The price goes up.” The pink light danced around a bit, letting those words hang in the air. “If you miss again, then once I get them, I’m gonna keep both and you two will have to trade me something every time you want to play with them.”

Mint and Licorice looked at each other with a grimace. They knew their pink companion wasn’t bluffing. Choco and Lemon floated over to them.

“M-maybe we should just cut our losses…” Choco muttered. “It’ll be hard enough to catch them as it is, maybe we do need ‘Berry’s help…”

“Lic, if we say no, she might sabotage us herself just to mess with us,” Mint pointed out. A light, airy giggle echoed through the air at that suggestion. “And having to trade with her after is definitely worse.”

Licorice looked at Lemon. Lemon just closed her eyes and nodded. Licorice sighed.

“Fine, ‘Berry, you win, 50-50.”

A pink-sleeved arm came from the pink light, as well as a doll, dark-skinned with long hair in a purple skirt. Another hand came up and petted the top of the dolls hand while a giggle came from the light.

“Good…”

—

“So which of these rooms do we hit first?” Alma asked.

“Whichever’s closest. It’s faint, but there’s more traces of ectoplasm in this direction, so we’re definitely gettin’ closer,” Charlie said. They stopped when they heard a clatter from some furniture behind them. They immediately turned, Alma wielding her bat.

“We know that was one of you, just come out already,” Alma ordered, taking her bat in both hands.

“O-okay, I’m coming out!” A voice said in response. Then a figure came out from behind the furniture, but to their surprise, it wasn’t a ghost, it was a person.

“H-hi.” She waved. “I’m Zoe.” Zoe was dark-skinned, wearing a pair of circular glasses and curly dark hair.

“Uh, hi, Zoe.” Charlie waved back. “Whaaaat’re ya doin’ here, exactly?”

“Charlie, look how she’s dressed,” Alma muttered. Zoe wasn’t wearing one of the frilly dresses the ghost girls had but she was still dressed childishly, in a long-sleeved purple-and-violet striped shirt with purple overalls ending in a skirt. She had similarly colored stockings going up her legs and a pair of chunky velcro sneakers.

“Oh…oh. Are you, uhm.” Charlie rubbed her head awkwardly. Zoe was already blushing.

“I’m uh.” Zoe sighed and pulled up her skirt for a second, revealing a quick snippet of the purple-and-white diaper she was wearing, then immediately tugging her skirt back down. “Y-yeah. I am.”

“How long have you been here?” Alma asked. Zoe sighed again.

“About…a little over a year?” She answered. “I think? It might be a little longer.” Charlie and Alma were both stunned. From the way Ida and the ghost girls had spoken, their worst case scenario was working in terms of months.

“Charlie!” Alma said, horrified. “We gotta get outta here, right now, before we get trapped here!” Charlie raised a hand up and chopped Alma in the head. “Ow.”

“Don’t say that right in front of Zoe, Alma, geez,” she chided. Alma grumbled and rubbed her head, but seemed to get the point. Charlie looked back at Zoe. “The longest time any of them said for someone who was enrolled here was six months.”

“Y-yeah,” Zoe nodded. “Ida usually only keeps someone for a few months, but I’ve been…kinda slow? Getting up to her standards. So I haven’t been able to leave yet.”

“Well, nuts to that,” Charlie said. “Just come with us. We got some stuff to get, then we can leave together.” Zoe shook her head.

“I appreciate that, but that won’t work. Once you’re enrolled, you can only leave when Ida says you can and then usually involves…” She grimaced and her hand gravitated on its own to the bulk between her legs. “Potty training.”

“Guh.” Alma groaned, closing her eyes and putting a hand to her temple. She really didn’t wanna be here anymore.

“So just, uhm, don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine,” Zoe said. Charlie didn’t look like she liked that, but Zoe was already changing the subject. “What’re you guys doing?”

“We’re risking our butts to make a stupid piece of candy,” Alma grumbled.

“We’re intrepidly hunting for the recipe for a Supernatural Sweet!” Charlie explained, getting a little defensive and elbowing Alma lightly partway through her explanation. “We need ectoplasm as a base for the enchantment for our recipe and they said the best place to look was the bedroom, the kitchen and the playroom.”

“Oh. Uhm.” Zoe scratched her head. She didn’t look like she entirely understood. “Well, yes, the ectoplasm will passively build in the places the ghosts congregate the most and those would be the rooms we spend the most time in. Ida gathers up all the ectoplasm and does something with it eventually, but she hasn’t done it yet, so there should be some there.”

“Okay, now I’m positive there’ll be a trap of some kind waiting for us when we get there,” Alma said.

“Mmmn, yeah. Probably,” Zoe admitted. “The girls - those four of them, they all really like playing with humans. So they’re definitely gonna wanna try and keep you here. But, uhm. Maybe I can help?” She suggested. Charlie was already clapping her hands together excitedly.

—

“Right here…” Zoe muttered, bending down next to a wall. She knocked on the wall a couple times until she heard a hollow thud, then worked her thumb into a small almost imperceptible hole. A second later, a large panel of the wall was sliding out.

“A secret passage, wow!” Charlie said in a hushed tone.

“Mmm, yup,” Zoe nodded as she finished opening up the hole in the wall. “One girl who was staying here once got annoyed that every time we had a race or played hide and seek, the ghosts would automatically win, ‘cause, y’know, they could go through walls. So she made a lot of secret passages like this that only the humans are supposed to know about to give them an edge.”

“Ehehehe, that’s pretty clever!” Charlie said and got down on one knee. Alma on the other hand looked even more sure she wanted to leave before she had to worry about being in a position where losing a game of hide and seek to a ghost was something she cared about. Charlie went first, then Alma, then finally Zoe, who squeezed herself into the small tunnel in a way where she could pull the panel back up behind her.

“Ergh, does it have to be so cramped?!” Alma groaned as she was stuck between Charlie and Alma. “How’re you winning a race if you gotta crawl like this, anyway?”

“Okay! I’m - I’m at the other end. Everybody, shhh!” Charlie said as she gently pushed the panel at the other end out, opening up the way for her to enter the bedroom. True to form, it looked like a place where a bunch of kids (or infantile ghosts) would sleep. There was a dresser, a mirror and a bunch of cribs, about 8-10 of them. Charlie let out a little scoff when she looked at them. “They gotta make us sleep in one of these? Good luck fitting us in….” She whispered.

“Charlie, get your butt outta my face!” Alma growled, keeping her voice as close to a whisper as she could manage as she pushed on Charlie’s diapered bottom, making her tumble out of the tunnel. Alma poked herself halfway out, looking over at the other end of the room, past all the cribs, where she saw several of the ghost girls waiting.

“There they are. Hurry up and get your ectoplasm and don’t let them know we’re here!” She whispered to Charlie. Charlie gave a saluting motion and produced a jar specifically for holding these kinds of supernatural implements. Or maybe an entirely normal mason jar she’d bought at the farmers market. It was hard to tell.

Alma kept her eyes firmly on the door. If the ghosts noticed they were here, she wanted to drag Charlie back into this tunnel immediately. But for now, the ghosts didn’t notice them. They were all halfway through the door, no doubt peeking down the hall to try and see them coming. They were all holding a large bedsheet over the door. Alma didn’t wanna know what would’ve happened if any of them had tried to walk in through that door.

It really wouldn’t have gone well, Alma realized, if they had to come through the front door. It really would’ve been a huge problem…

…if Zoe hadn’t found them exactly when she did.

Alma’s eyes narrowed. She half-turned her head around. Then she looked over at Charlie, who was busying gathering her ectoplasm and opened her mouth to say something -

THNK!

The panel of the secret passage slammed back into place in Alma’s face, separating her from Charlie.

“Shit — CHARLIE!” She cried, trying to force the panel out again, but it wouldn’t budge. She turned her head. “Zoe, I can’t get out!”

Zoe didn’t say anything, but all of a sudden, Alma felt a hand reaching from behind and grabbing at her, pushing something over her face. Alma inhaled and instantly regretted it as she felt cloth brushing her face and felt a rush of a sweet scent into her nose and mouth.

She slumped over, her face falling against the edge of the tunnel as she fell asleep within seconds.
