“And, go ahead and step in!”
“I can do this myself, Ida…”
“Ohhh, please, just let nana do this part one more time, Charlie?”
Charlie let out a little laugh. Ida really was hitting her with the bambi eyes. She couldn’t say no to that.
“Alriiiight,” she said and she slipped her left leg into the left hole. Then her right foot into the right hole. Ida finished pulling the training panties up Charlie’s legs, then they did the same with her jeans. Charlie let Ida zip them up as well.
“Huuuh. Your last day is already here.” Ida sniffed and wiped a single tear from her eye. “Where did the time go? It all went by so fast…!”
“Weee are gonna have to agree to disagree there!” Charlie said, still laughing as she patted herself on the waist. Gosh, it felt weird to not have any bulk there for the first time in two months. It also felt weird to be wearing actual pants again.
“Alright, alright. Nana has to be strong,” Ida sighed. She put a hand on Charlie’s shoulder. “Okay, Charlie. This is your last test. Zoe and Alma are expecting us at Zoe’s apartment at 2:00 PM. You have to keep your training panties clean until then.”
Charlie popped her arm up into a salute. She hopped in the air and clicked her heels together for good measure. God, it felt good to have her full strength back.
“No problemo, Ghost Nanny!” She said.
“Now, as for all of you,” Ida said, pointing at the four ghost girls, who all looked varying levels of mopey about today being the last day of Charlie’s residence in the daycare. “If any of you try to make Charlie have an accident to keep her here, you’ll be in very, very big trouble!” She said, wagging a finger at them.
“Iiiii’m sure it’ll be fine, Ida,” Charlie said.
“And you!” Ida suddenly appeared right in Charlie’s voice, getting her to stumble back. She felt fortunate that she didn’t pee herself a little just from that. “Charlie, if you have an accident for any reason, graduation is off! So if somebody tries to do something silly, you’d better call me! You’re not gonna be able to pin it on somebody else after it happens and still graduate, understand?” She asked, waving her finger in Charlie’s face now. Charlie held her hands up.
“I-I get it! Really, Ida!” She said. “I’m not lookin’ to cause any more trouble, promise. Anything happens, you’re my first call!”
“Good!” Ida clapped both of her hands together. “I’ll be back in a bit!” She said and, as per usual, vanished into the ceiling, leaving Charlie with the four ghost girls.
“So this is it, huh?” Licorice asked. All four of them looked varying levels of close to tears. Choco looked the closest.
“Ah, geez. C’mere, you guys,” Charlie said and immediately grabbed Licorice, pulling her into a hug. The other three joined quickly and that was pretty much all they could take before the waterworks started.
“Y-you’re gonna come back and visit us, Charlie, right?” Choco asked.
“Y’know, you guys really gotta figure out a way to get the internet in this place if you wanna keep talkin’ to people after they leave!” Charlie teased. “Not many people wanna visit if they know it can get them another three months in this place!” A couple of the ghosts muttered to themselves, unable to really beat those allegations. The truth was, if any of their old graduates showed up, they would absolutely try to capture them again so they could play with them for a few more months.
“Look, I got a lotta work to catch up on. There’s a LOT of sweets out there that have been goin’ unhunted the last two months!” Charlie said. “But….y’know, I’ll probably swing back through this town eventually. And maybe I’ll poke my head in when I do.”
“Hehehehe!” Mint grinned through her own tears. “We’re totally gonna set it up so you’re gonna WANT us to catch you again when you come back!” She declared. At that, Charlie actually sniffed herself. Somehow THAT of all things was the thing that really made it sink in that she was gonna miss these guys too.
“I can’t wait to see it,” she said, ruffling Mint’s hair.
Once all of the goodbyes and hugging and crying with these four were done, Charlie took a second for herself, just to emotionally catch her breath, wipe her eyes, all that stuff. Strawberry, give her credit, waited for all of that to take its course before she approached Charlie, floating so the two were at eye-level (she was a good deal shorter than Charlie when they both stood feet on the ground). Charlie gave her a smile.
“Heya, ‘Berry,” she said. “How’re ya feelin’?” She tilted her head and grinned. “Did I make good on that deal of ours?” Strawberry crossed her arms.
“You preformed at or above expectations as a replacement companion,” Strawberry said in a very professional-sounding tone, not betraying any emotion besides cool indifference.
“I’m just glad you’re not callin’ me dolly,” Charlie laughed. “So, is that good enough for a goodbye hug?” She asked, holding her arms out.
“Hmph.” Strawberry turned her nose up. “I’m not going to continue indulging your constant need for codependent affirmation with physical affection, Charlie. You should see one of your human therapists about that.” Charlie let out a snort at that.
‘Yeah, you’re gonna be fine, pinky.’ And inside her stomach, Charlie felt a little well of relief. ‘…Good.’
“Besides,” Strawberry said, reaching a hand behind her back. “I have something better than a hug.” She brought her hand back out, offering Charlie…
…a strawberry parfait.
Charlie stared at it for a moment. Her expression when she looked back up at Strawberry was unimpressed.
“…” She opened her mouth, then closed it again, pursing her lips for a moment. She looked at the parfait again. “This wouldn’t happen to be an ectoplasm parfait, would it?”
“It’s so funny you should ask that,” Strawberry said. “As a matter of fact, it does happen be a strawberry parfait that was without a doubt, absolutely made with almost 100% ectoplasm.” She tapped the glass with her other hand. “This part that looks like whipped cream? All ectoplasm. Very difficult to whip it like this and get it to keep its shape.”
“That’s very impressive,” Charlie said. “Uhm. You know that this is basically the exact kind of sabotage Ida was talking about, like, 30 seconds ago? That she very specifically told you guys not to do?”
“I don’t think there’s another even remotely sensible interpretation of what’s happening besides that exact description,” Strawberry said. “There’s no way you could describe this except as sabotage of the precise kind that Ida expressly forbade.”
“Aaand, you’re just.” Charlie held her hands out, expectantly. “Doing it anyway?”
“I am.” Strawberry nodded.
Charlie went back to staring at the parfait. She blinked once, slowly and wearily. Then, she looked back at Strawberry.
“’Berry, there’s no way I’m eating that thing. So just get rid of it, ‘cause if you don’t, about five minutes after I leave, you’re gonna realize how much you regret not sayin’ goodbye to me for real instead of spending our last couple minutes together doin’ shtick.”
Strawberry nodded a couple times.
“I’ll take that under advisement.”
Charlie let out a sigh. The two stared into each other’s eyes for a moment.
Strawberry pulled the parfait glass back and lunged the rest of her body forward. Charlie grabbed her stun baton out of her jacket. Strawberry’s lips landed on her cheek before she could swing it. The weapon dropped out of her hand mid-swing, clattering to the ground a second before it would’ve smashed the glass holding the parfait.
Strawberry smirked at Charlie like the cat that ate the canary. Charlie blinked her eyes, stumbling around woozily.
“You’re so predictable, Charlie,” she said. “My head was closer than the glass. But I knew you’d swing at the glass, instead of at me.” She giggled. “I do love that silly little softness about you. Now.” She offered the parfait to Charlie again. Charlie stared at it, a hand on her head.
“I…” She shook her head. “I can’t eat that. I can’t.”
“Hmmm.” Strawberry leaned in and kissed her on the other cheek, holding it longer this time. Charlie dropped into a sitting position on the floor. Strawberry floated down and sat in Charlie’s lap. Still offering the parfait.
“… … …m-maybe just. One bite. Wouldn’t be so bad?”
Strawberry’s smile got bigger. A ghost hand briefly took the parfait out of her hand, so she could put both hands on Charlie’s shoulders. She leaned in again.

“Ohhhhh, my God, that was such a great triiiiip!” Alma stretched her legs out as she walked around the living room of Zoe’s apartment. “I almost never get to go back to Mexico, man, I wish I didn’t have to come baaaaaaaack!”
“It was awesome,” Zoe said, laying on her couch and scrolling on her phone through all the pictures she’d taken. “Are you from Acapulco?”
“Nooope.” Alma laced her fingers behind her back and bent down, stretching her arms out. “Torreon. But I went to Acapulco like, once, when I was little. The beaches were just as sweet as I remembered. Heheheheh!” She poked Zoe in the head. “Speakin’ of, I can’t believe it took you like half the trip just to get in the water!”
“H-hey, cut me some slack!” Zoe said. “The daycare didn’t have a pool, I haven’t gone swimming in over a year!” Alma snickered.
“Just as well, we didn’t pack any swim diapers.”
“You’re so baaaaaaaad!” Zoe cried, throwing a pillow at Alma. It bonked her in the head. Both girls laughed. Alma sat down on the couch next to Zoe, holding the thrown throw pillow in her hand.
“Hey, uh, so, y’know. Seriously though,” she said, squeezing the pillow a bit to do something with her hands. “If learning the other 75% of making furniture doesn’t work out, or whatever.” She looked away. “Sometimes I think, maybe. Charlie and I could use a third wheel, or somethin’.” Zoe realized what was being offered and her eyes got a little bigger. She looked down, her hands on her knees.
“O-oh…” She said, suddenly feeling like this had gotten pretty serious. “Uhm. Y’know, I sorta got the impression that you didn’t like working with Charlie. But, uh. You think I should join you?”
“Ah, well, look.” Alma brought the pillow up and pressed it against the back of her head. “Don’t get me wrong, some parts of the whole Sweets Huntin’ gig annoy the crap outta me. But, maybe, also…” She half-looked at Zoe, then looked away. “The experience isn’t always that bad, either. For learnin’ the stuff I wanna learn.”
“…yeah. Totally.” Zoe nodded. “I think I understand something about how that feels.”
“…yeah,” Alma said. “Totally.” She cleared her throat. “But, uh. Don’t tell Charlie that, seriously!” She said, dropping the pillow. “I leverage my mopey aggrieved demeanor to extract the highest possible compensation for my labor from her!” She said. “So….you’re a scab if you tell her I said that! Got it?!” Zoe giggled into her hand. A buzz came from the door and she stood up from the couch.
“Your secret is safe with me, I promise,” she said as she went to the door. “That’s gonna be them,” she said and hit the button to open the door, not paying any more attention to the buzzer or intercom than that, going right back to her conversation with Zoe. “Um. I’ll think about it! Y’know, for the longest time, I didn’t think I could make it on my own, but, for the first time in a long time, I’m. Starting to actually see what trying new things does for me! So…” She gave a little pump with her fists. “Definitely… …maybe. At least once.”
“Yeah.” Alma nodded, standing up too. “Yeah. Cool,” she said.
Neither of them was sure where to take the conversation from there, so they were thankful there was a knock on the door. Zoe went to get the door and opened it.
“Hi, Ida!” She said. Then, her expression went from one of happiness to something else. “…um.” She stared out the door for a second. “A-Alma. Can you come here?”
“Huh?” Alma raised an eyebrow and approached the door to see Ida enter Zoe’s apartment with a diaper bag slung over her shoulder….and pushing a double-seated stroller. Which had both Charlie and Strawberry strapped into it. Both wearing onesies over some clearly very thick diapers. Alma stared at the scene for a second, unable to comprehend what she was seeing.
“…what the hell’s going on?!” She eventually exclaimed. “I thought she was done today! What is this?!”
“Well. It’s funny you should ask that!” Ida said, her congenial nanny demeanor showing just a hint of annoyance as she entered. “Thank you, Zoe, you’re a dear,” she said as Zoe took the diaper bag. “I’ll explain! I told the entire daycare, including these two, that today was Charlie’s last day and all she had to do to graduate was stay clean until 2:00 and that anybody that interfered with that would be in big trouble! WELL!” Ida clapped her hands together. “The second I left the room, Strawberry offered Charlie a strawberry parfait, kissed her 13 times and Charlie ate the whole thing in about 45 seconds and then pooped her training panties three times in a row.”
That explanation hung over the room for a moment. Zoe just stared, still holding Ida’s diaper bag. Alma slowly put her head in her hands.
“It’s always the goddamn strawberries,” she muttered. “And you couldn’t do anything to, I don’t know, stop this?” She asked Ida.
“Oh, I could’ve stopped it instantly,” Ida said. “If Charlie had called for me. Which I told her to do. Again, I can’t stress this part enough, I told them both all of this about five seconds before this all happened.”
“For the love of God, Charlie…” Alma murmured into her hands.
“I didn’t wanna tattle!” Charlie whimpered, fidgeting in her stroller seat, grunting and trying to free herself, but unable to find the strength in her arms to do so. “Alma, y’gotta believe meeeeee!” Strawberry let out a weak series of giggles.
“You just did it ‘cause you really wanted to stay with me!” She declared. Despite being rendered to a ‘littlest’ state for causing this, she clearly considered it a victory.
“Alright, both of you two shush,” Ida said flatly, sending a pair of pacifiers into both their mouths, silencing both of them. She let out a sigh. “I figured I should bring the both of them here so you could see for yourselves. But. Both of them have been reset to freshly enrolled, so Charlie won’t be going anywhere for at least a couple more months. Obviously.”
“I can’t freakin’ believe this,” Alma said exasperatedly. Zoe patted her on the shoulder.
“Mmmn. To be honest, I kinda figured something like this might happen,” Zoe said. “The daycare is kinda like um. The interest on a credit card or a loan? It has a way of sticking to you.”
“Well, then! Now that that’s settled!” Ida put her hands together, her annoyance gone, or at least buried again. “Since it’ll be a while before we all go our separate ways, would you two like to work at the daycare as assistants?”
“Um.” Zoe blinked.
“No.” Alma brushed right past Ida so she could approach the stroller, where she jabbed Charlie in the stomach, getting her to squeak into her pacifier. “You still owe me a paycheck for the months you’re gonna spend pooping your pants and taking stroller rides. I’m going home! And by the way?” She reached into her pocket and pulled out a set of keys, jingling them in front of Charlie. “I ain’t ridin’ a bus back 12 hours across the state. So I’m takin’ your car!”
“Mmmph…” Charlie muttered into her pacifier. Whatever she said, it wasn’t a compelling counterargument as Alma stormed out of the apartment.
“Um! I’ll uh. I’ll call you when she gets out for real!” Zoe called after Alma.
“If that ever even freakin’ happens!” Alma yelled back as she stepped into the elevator. The doors closed behind her. She was very gone.
Honestly, Charlie couldn’t really blame her.
“Uh, well. That was a little awkward.” Zoe rubbed her arm. “Doooooo you still wanna go to the park?” She asked Ida.
“That sounds lovely!” Ida said.
“Okay, uh.” Zoe slung the diaper bag over her shoulder. “I think I’m ready. Let’s go!” She said. Ida pushed the stroller out the door and Zoe followed.
“Oh, I want to hear all about this vacation or yours…”
“It was amazing, the place we stayed was right on the beach, it was great!”
Charlie sighed into her pacifier as she felt her seat jostle slightly every time the stroller bumped on the ground. As she gave a few forlorn sucks and settled back into her seat, it occurred to her. It was almost Christmas now, Halloween was well past. But she still felt like she’d definitely gotten a more lopsided amount of “trick” than “treat” this year.
The end.
