[Happy Halloweeeeeeeeen! Appropriately for the season, we have a new Spooktacular story to post here at the end of the month! I'm doing things a bit differently this time in that this is the first time I'll be posting a story that isn't already finished when I start posting it! This one is still being written, but I would like to at least try to get it all up by Halloween, so I'm gonna try and write, edit and post it all at the same time. I would eventually like to approach things in a more serialized way, so this is a good dry run to that, I think!
Also, y'know, despite that I might still not get this one done and uploaded by Halloween. We'll see. If the final chapters come out in November, just be cool about it!
And as always, thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy! I'd love to hear any feedback you have, you can always find me on Bluesky at DramaPajamasDP!]

Hi there! I’m Charlie Pell and I’m a Supernatural Sweets Hunter! I search for rare and magical treats from all over the world that can have great effects on the people who taste them! Have you ever heard of a sweet that can heal someone’s sickness or give them confidence or fill them with great luck? Well they’re out there if you know how to look, have the right ingredients and toss in a teeeeensy pinch of magic! And it’s my job to find as many of them as possible and try to catalog them all, for the good of people everywhere!
Alsooooooooooo I might have a bit of a sweet tooth, and just wanna taste as many rare and magical treats as I can. Ehehehehe!
So I search all over the place for all kinds of great Supernatural Sweets! And helping me is my partner-witch, she’s the best! She’s….
—
“Heeeey! Good morning, Alma!”
Charlie came around the corner by grabbing onto a stoplight and doing a full swing around it before hopping off, landing on her tiptoes and giving a big, exuberant wave to…
“How’re you today!”
“Mrruuuh.”
A considerably less exuberant young woman. She contrasted Charlie’s red cap, red jacket and jeans with a dark hoodie and a long skirt.
“You’re even more wearily peppy than usual today, Charlie,” Alma grumbled as she sipped her coffee from it’s to-go cup.
“That’s cause this is the best season of the whole year! It’s Halloween - it’s the season of treats! And like, the season of magic and witching and stuff. Aren’t you happy for that?” She asked, leaning into Alma’s personal space, then hesitating. “Oh, wait, it’s not like, offensive to ask if witches like Halloween, is it? Is it like cultural appropriation to you guys?” She asked, sounding genuinely worried.
“No. Halloween is considered a blessed time among most witch clans,” Alma said very dryly as her hand came up, cupped Charlie’s face and pushed it away. “And maybe I wound be happy about celebrating Halloween if I was spending it back at my coven. But my coven saw fit to continue my training by contracting me to you. So I’m here instead,” she said. “So whaddaya want, Charlie.”
“I’m so glad you asked!” Charlie said, making a pair of finger guns. “Today, we’re hunting down the legendary Treat Truffle!” She said, pulling a piece of very old looking paper out of her pocket with a drawing of what appeared to be a chocolate truffle on it. “The Treat Truffle is a super-rare, super valuable Supernatural Sweet! It says that if someone eats it, it rewards them with a blessing of great luck!” Alma exhaled through her nose like somebody who’d heard this kind of thing before.
“So how do we make it?” She asked, twirling her wrist a bit and swirling what was left of her coffee.
“Well, I have all of the ingredients for the magic chocolate shell, we just need something to enchant the filling too!” Charlie said.
“It sounds like a pretty powerful enchantment,” Alma said, quirking an eyebrow. “Do we have anything that strong?”
“Welll….” Charlie pulled out a notebook and flipped through it. “Do we have any dragon scales?” Alma shook her head. Definitely not. “Angel Wing Feathers?” Alma held her hands up expectantly.
“If I had Angel Wing Feathers, you think I’d be drinking this cheap-ass coffee?” Alma asked.
“Pffft - definitely not. Uhm…” She looked at her notes. Then at Alma. Then at her notes. Then at Alma. “How about, mmmm…Witch’s Blood?”
“Hell no!”
“What if we just thought of it like a blood test? I’d pay you double for today!” Charlie took a step back. “…how about Witch’s Tears instead?” Alma’s eyes narrowed.
“I am vetoing Witch’s Blood and any other Witchly Fluids. You know, you’re intending to eat this stuff, right?”
“Oh, we’re just using it to enchant the other ingredients, not putting it into the mix itself,” Charlie clarified. “So there’s no risk of cannibalism! Or, um, auto…cannibalism?”
The two stared at each other for about six seconds.
“….still no, Charlie!” Alma insisted.
“Yup. Yup. Y’know what. Shouldn’t have brought it up. Just gonna…” Charlie made several quick crossing-out motions with her pen. “Okay! That’s not a problem! We’ll just go with my fallback plan!” She pulled out a rolled up piece of paper and unfurled it, revealing a drawing of a ghost (in reality, just a white blob with black circles for eyes). “Ghostly ectoplasm!” Alma squinted at the drawing.
“Where’re we gonna get ghostly ectoplasm?” She asked. “For ghostly ectoplasm, don’t you need ghosts?”
“As it so happens, my ultra-cool supernatural tracker abilities—“
“You mean browsing reddit?”
“Ghk.” Charlie let out a slightly strangled noise, then pushed on. “My super-cool supernatural tracking abilities revealed a verified source of ghostly activity!”
“Okay…” Alma said, her eyes narrowing suspiciously.
“…on the other end of the state!” Charlie added. Alma’s head sunk. “You know what that means?”
“Road trip,” Alma murmured, running her hand down her face.
“Road trip!” Charlie repeated. “And road trip meeeeaaans….” She wrapped an arm around Alma. “SNACK RUN! Let’s go!” She declared, half-dragging Alma down the street towards the nearest corner store, her witchly companion just continuing to groan into her hands.
—
“Your directions say the place is up here on the left,” Alma said, reading off of Charlie’s phone, then handing it back to her. Many hours of driving and snacking later, they had gone from driving all day to driving into the night. But, they were finally arriving at their destination.
“Yup! It’s right here!” Charlie said as she took a turn into an empty parking lot with a building at the other end of it.
“Looks abandoned,” Alma muttered, elbow up against the window and her head in her hand. “I guess that makes sense for a ghost hangout, they usually try pretty hard to avoid people. So what is this place any…way…?” She asked as she looked up at the sign on the building.
‘SWEET DREAMS DAYCARE’.
She kept staring for a moment.
“NOPE!”
And she was slamming the door of the car closed and walking away in the opposite direction a few seconds after that.
“Oh, geez, Alma!” Charlie called as she unbuckled herself and got out of the car as well. “Alma - Alma, honey, we drove for eight hours to get here, where’re ya walkin’ to?!”
“I’ll take a bus back! I’ll hitchhike! ‘Cause — NOPE!” Alma swung her hands wide. “I am officially vetoing this!” She stopped only once Charlie ran in front of her.
“We haven’t even gone inside yet!”
“Abandoned daycare plus ghosts equals us getting stuck in diapers,” Alma said, emphatically pounding her fist into her hand. “Which involves, y’know, me getting stuck in diapers!”
“That’s not gonna happen!” Charlie insisted. Alma looked at her, to put it mildly, with skepticism.
“Not gonna happen? Just like it wasn’t gonna happen last time?” She asked incredulously. Charlie grimaced and tugged at her collar.
“Okay - yes. I did say that. And like I said at the time, I admit! That mansion was a bit over our pay grade!” Charlie said, holding her index finger and thumb a small width apart. “But, like I also said at the time, I’m gonna totally overhaul my process for finding the locations of our ingredients, and I did! Totally overhauled! New process! New! New! New!” She said, repeatedly flexing her hands in and out in Alma’s face.
“Stop - saying the word new!” Alma grumbled, swatting Charlie’s hands away.
“In my ne — erm, revised process, this place is totally safe! The ghosts here are all too low-level to be able to mess with us! You’re much stronger than them, Alma, I know it! Go ahead and do whatever witchy sense-y…scry-y-yyyy stuff you gotta to confirm!”
“Mrrrrrghh.” Alma growled at her, but turned towards the empty daycare and tapped her temples to her eyes. Her eyes glowed purple for a few seconds as she took in a long breath…then stopped as she released it.
“And? Aaaaaand?” Charlie asked, leaning into her.
“It’s soft in there, yeah,” Alma grumbled, annoyed she had to give Charlie credit for that. “It’s like five, six-ish, I think, and they’re all pretty weak.” Relatively, anyway. To a regular human, they’d probably be able to do whatever they want. To a witch like Alma and somebody experienced with the supernatural like Charlie, it wasn’t much. She rounded on Charlie and jabbed her in the stomach. “But low-level ghosts can still be tricky! They can still do stuff like fly and float through walls and possess crap! And this is their turf! It’s not worth it just to make some truffles, Charlie!” Charlie grimaced, then raised a finger.
“I’ll let you have the first taste of the truffle when it’s done.”
Alma stared at her, eyes narrowing, then pushed out a breath through her nose.
“I want collateral,” she said. “If I get stuck in diapers sitting on some ghost nanny’s knee, you gotta give me a bonus!” She said, pointing very emphatically at Charlie’s face.
“Like - like what kinda bonus?” Charlie asked, worried.
“I want a month’s rent!” Alma said immediately. Charlie winced.
“My sweets budget…” She whimpered. Then shook her head. “It’s fine - it’s fine!” She waved her hands. “We just won’t get caught and none of that stuff’ll happen, so it’s fine!” She stuck a hand out. “Deal!”
Alma grabbed her hand and gave it a particularly surly shake.
“Let’s get this over with,” she grumbled.
“I bet they’ll just ignore us the entire time!” Charlie said as the two headed towards the door. “Like you said, they prefer to avoid people!”
…
…
As the two entered the building, five soft glowing lights hovered above them, first outside, then floating through the walls and ceiling back into the daycare.
“Hehe, new visitors! We’ve finally got new visitors!” A yellow light said as it bounced up and down.
“Ohhh, it’s been so long!” A brown light complained as it swirled in a circle. “I was worried we weren’t going to be getting new people again ever…”
“There’s even two of them this time, I think they’ll be lots of fun!” A red light twirled back and forth.
“What should we do first?” A green light asked, drifting towards the others.
“Let’s diaper them first!” The yellow light said.
“What if we feed them first? Ehehe, isn’t it cute when they have a bottle and wet themselves the first time?” The brown light asked.
“Maybe put them to sleep first? It is getting late…” The green light offered.
“No matter what, we have to make sure they’re dressed before we do the other stuff,” the red light said confidently. “We’ve gotta figure out the best way to do that, before anything!”
“Hmhmhmhm….”
The other lights all stopped moving. The fifth drifted towards them, then drifted away, separating itself from the group.
“I know how to get them,” it said simply. It was greeted with several rude noises and the other lights (at least a couple of them) blew raspberries at it.
“If we let you catch them, you’ll hog them for yourself, ‘Berry, like you always do,” the red light said, flat and unamused. The pink light just giggled again. An arm slowly came from the light, wrapped in a long pink sleeve with white frills on the other. Clutched in the arm was a dark-skinned doll of a girl in her own purple dress with long hair.
“Well. If you all change your mind, you can just come find me.” Another hand came up and patted the doll on the top of its head. “Me and dolly will be happy to help.”
With that, the pink light floated away, leaving the other four to grumble to themselves about how her.
“Okay, so, everybody know what they’re gonna do?” The red light asked.
“Mmn!”
“Yeah!”
“Hehehe, yes!”
“Alright!” Two hands came out of the red light and clapped together. The four lights parted and in their place floated four girls, each with pale, translucent skin, each wearing a long, flowing dress lined with frills and petticoats giving them a full voluminous shape that swayed and bounced through the air with their movements. Their dresses, as well as their eyes and hair were all varying shades of a single color, matching the lights they’d been embodying a few seconds ago. The red-haired red-clad girl pumped her arms excitedly.
“This is definitely gonna work!”
—
“This isn’t working at alllll!”
A large, particularly thick looking diaper with a yellow light surrounding it floated towards Charlie. Alma kicked it away with her boots. Next was a bottle carried by a green light. Alma swatted it out of the air with a baseball bat. A rocking horse slowly inched along by a brown light made its way towards them. Alma stopped, looked at it and tipped it over, then kicked it a few times, getting a wail of despair out of the ghost piloting it.
“I will say, it is all a little on the nose,” Charlie said, perhaps too nonchalantly for the fact that they were currently being attacked on all ends, for a certain definition of the word attacked. “You walk into a daycare and you immediately get jumped by a bunch of possessed baby stuff, I mean.”
“That’s the point,” Alma groused as she whacked away another attempted attack with her bat. “If you go to places with baby stuff in them and a lot of memories floating around of babies being treated like babies, then the magical energy in that area will be influenced by that and stuff that wants to treat people like babies will congregate there. That’s how magic works, Charlie!” She said, her explanation getting particularly snappy at the end. “If you pick a place to gather the materials you need for something magic that’s had, I dunno, seventeen thousand diaper changes in it over its life time, then, yeah! The magic there is gonna naturally want to keep the diaper train rolling! Objects in motion tend to stay in motion! Newton! Physics!? Is any of this getting through, Charlie?!”
“Ahhh, ahaha…yup,” Charlie said nervously, looking significantly more scared of Alma than the ghosts accosting them. “You’re right! I shoulda…” She looked at Alma, then suddenly looked away. “I shoulda thought of that, for sure! Right again, Alma!” Alma stopped kicking one of the ghosts for a second, then stopped to look at Charlie, quirking an eyebrow up.
“Charlie,” she said, biting the single word out. “Was this the only place that had the ectoplasm you needed?”
“Uhm.” Charlie rubbed her head. Alma slapped her hands on her head.
“Oh my God, you picked this place on purpose!” She exclaimed. “Charlie!”
“I’m sorry! I’m sorrryyyyy, Alma!” Charlie put her hands together and bowed her head down low in contrition. “I could never forgive myself if you got seriously hurt because we went messing around with a magic tiger or a vengeful flesh ripping spectre or something…! So this time and uhm…”
“This time and?” Alma repeated.
“This time and, uhm, other times.”
“How many other times?”
“Some number that’s close to…99 to 100 percent of times….” Charlie muttered. “I pick places that if we mess up, will just baby us for a while and then let us go! It’s a safety measure, I promise — OWWWWW! Owww….”
Charlie rubbed her shoulder, where Alma had just punched it very, very hard.
“Be glad I didn’t swing my bat at you. Just get your stupid ectoplasm so we can go,” Alma groused.
“Yup! Definitely! Right away!” Charlie said. Another possessed diaper flew at her. Alma swung her bat and smacked it away without looking. “Hey, you’re getting really good at deflecting stuff, y’know!”
“You better not start praising my magic after you just admitted that you’re literally taking me to the babiest supernatural threats you can find,” she said as the two walked away.
“This, uhm - kff - isn’t going well,” the brown-clad ghost muttered, holding her stomach where she’d been kicked.
“That one’s a witch!” The yellow one said, rubbing her head. “She’s like, super experienced at fighting ghosts!” That’s not fair! Licorice, can’t we ask her to stop that?” She said, tugging the red ghost’s sleeves.
“I think one of them mentioned she’s in training, so I think she’s a beginner,” the green ghost said from her position flat on her face on the floor. That didn’t help any of them feel better about themselves.
“Oh man, we are bad at this,” the red ghost muttered. “Okay. Okay, we can’t attack her from the front. We gotta split up, then. Which of us is best at shapeshifting?”
“Oh, uhm, I think that’s Mint?” The brown ghost said. The green ghost picked herself up.
“Yeah. Yeah, I think I can handle that.” She took in a breath. She briefly withdrew back into a pulsing green sphere of light. When she came out again, she looked like Alma, albeit with green eyes.
The other three ghosts shared looks with each other. They knew this next part wasn’t gonna be pleasant.
—-
“Here we go! Here’s a trail of ectoplasm!”
Charlie pointed out a glistening silver-y transluscent series of specks on the ground. She flicked a gloved finger through it and gave it a sniff.
“Yup, this is the real deal!” She said, rubbing her fingers together. “C’mon, Alma, it’s in this direction!”
“Hold up,” Alma said warily, holding a hand up. “I sense something, I think they’re getting ready to attack again - whoa!”
Alma stumbled back half a step as three of the ghosts, one in yellow, one in red and one in brown, all just rushed at her out of nowhere and started trying to grab at her.
“TAKE THIS! AND THIS! AND THIS!”
“Uhm! Please let us grab you, we would appreciate it!”
“You should stop being good at fighting us, that’s cheating!”
“Geez laweez, little freakazoids!” Alma growled as she stepped back, swinging her bat and throwing a few defensive kicks for good measure. The attacks weren’t particularly…effective. They were about as bad as all the possessed crap from earlier. It was just three girls in fancy dresses trying to grab and yank and push Alma and she was a lot stronger than them, so after a moment she just stood her ground and elbowed one of them in the nose. It was the yellow one. She went down.
“Owwww, she didn’t listen!” The yellow ghost moaned.
“Oh, no, Lemon!” The brown one cried, stopping her attack to tend to her fallen comrade.
“How are you this good at hitting us?! We’re ghosts, for cryin’ out loud!” The red one, Licorice, whined as she futilely kept swinging. She was the only one, so Alma just kinda. Reached a hand out and put it on her forehead, pushing her back. Licorice’s arms were too short to reach her.
“It’s a really basic enchantment. You guys have to be at least semi-corporeal to interact with stuff? So I just kinda. Enchant myself to bridge the rest of that gap so I can touch you.” Alma shook her head. “Why am I telling you this. Buzz off!” She shoved Licorice backwards, the ghost stumbling and falling onto her butt. She threateningly waved her bat. “Now all of you knock it off or I’ll knock your teeth out!”
“U-uhhh! Uhhh! Tactical retreat!”
The brown and yellow ghosts grabbed the red one and all three of them floated away through a wall, clearly terrified. Alma huffed and settled the bat on her shoulder.
“Nerve of those guys, huh, Charlie?” Alma asked and looked around. Only then did she realize she was alone in that hallway and Charlie hadn’t been with her for at least a few minutes now.
“Hm. Crap.”
